Door County winter sports have grown in popularity among locals and visitors alike. There are more opportunities to snowshoe, ski, and fat bike than ever before. Here’s a guide to some of the best places to go to enjoy winter sports in Door County.
Snowshoeing
When the snow falls in droves, the morning after brings some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable to the trails of Door County. Head to the parks, a nature preserve, or our favorite spot, the Ridges Sanctuary, and strap on some snowshoes for great exercise and photos.

Door County offers many options for great cross-country skiing on groomed trails at Peninsula State Park, Newport State Park, Potawattomi State Park, and Crossroads at Big Creek. Rent skis at the following locations:

Teresa K. Hilander Community Ice Rink, Sister Bay
The TKH Ice Rink offers a beautiful ice rink when temperatures allow from late December through February. There’s open skating on the recreational rink, and a full-size rink for hockey and broomball. Skate, stick, helmet, and broomball equipment rentals available.
Sturgeon Bay Ice Rink, Memorial Field, Sturgeon Bay
The City of Sturgeon Bay maintains an ice rink as weather permits, located on the parking lot of the Memorial Field Warming House during the winter season. Watch newspapers or listen for radio announcements for the schedule.

Fat Tire Biking
If you thought trail riding was for summer and fall only, think again. Fat tire biking has become one of our favorite Door County winter sports activities offering a completely different experience than you’ve ever had on a bike. See our parks in a new way as you plow through snow-covered roads. Newport State Park offers a fat bike trail, roughly five miles and groomed in some sections.
Fat tire bikes are available for rent at Nor Door Sport & Cyclery in Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay.
Ice Fishing
Ever thought about giving ice fishing a whirl? Well why not rent a heated shack, pack a cooler and head out for an afternoon of fishing fun!
We highly recommend Late Eyes Sport Fishing. They will take you out with a guide and show you the ropes or you can rent an ice house from them all ready set up and waiting.
